Some of the best games ever created are considered retro today. But this doesn’t change the fact, these games are great to play. Recently i discovered a game on Steam i played years back when i was a kid. It was on sale, so i decided to give it a try and see whether or not this game would hold up to my memory.
Why play an old game?
But first things first. Why even play an old game? In this case it was somewhat convenient for me personally. As described in one of my previous posts i have to be on the couch a lot with my feet up. So sitting in front of my gaming pc at the desk isn’t really gonna do it. To be exact, an hour a day is the max my feet are tolerating right now (keeping in mind i have to do other things around the apartment too). So chilling on the couch, playing video games on my old laptop and the TV as screen using my Xbox Controller was the way to go. But there is the problem. My old laptop is roughly ten years old and the performance isn’t really good in modern days. To increase the amount of games i could play i looked at the Steam shop and found „Star Wars Knights of the old Republic 2: The Sith Lords“. Thanks to Steam this game now has partial controller support what makes it perfect for my kind of „gaming console“.
What makes it so great?
But now let’s get into playing this game. Starting your game and going through the tutorial you realize how far video game graphics have come. „The Sith Lords“ does look like it’s from 2005, and well… because it is. But this gives the world your delving in something retro and a nice vibe i like. As soon as i saw those graphics and listened to the soundtrack i remembered all those hours i played this game as a kid. I don’t mind the graphics being this „bad“ even in modern games if the gameplay is great. In my opinion gameplay is more important than pure graphics because with bad gameplay there is no fun in playing.
But back to the game. The Story develops nicely as you start your journey as a banished Jedi. In order to find out why you are hunted down by the Sith, you begin to explore the realms of the old Republic after the mandalorian war and the Jedi civil war. With each quest you take, you discover more details about your own history. Further you learn a lot about your companions and what drives them to help you along your path. With each level you progress you build your character the way you want him to be. Choosing from various attributes you decide how you want to play this game. Depending on your character you can either become a violent Sith Lord or you become charismatic and a master in negotiation tactics so you can stay peaceful and still reach your goals. But keep in mind that every decision you take, every answer you give will have an impact on your companions and their disposition. According to your style of gameplay you can also choose your companions depending on their weaknesses and strengths. This gives you a lot of variety and a very nice role-playing experience. For example can you build your character to be very smart and charismatic but you choose to have warriors as companions, just in case your negotiation skills aren’t enough to keep the peace.
Final thoughts
In summary i think this is one of the best RPGs i played in regards of storytelling and keeping you as a player interested in exploring the fictional universe. Every side mission gives depth to the story and even can have an impact on how well you progress on your path to mastering the force. I was able to spend hours at a time playing without getting frustrated or bored while running around doing missions and levelling up my character. Usually i get bored doing things like this quiet quickly but the way this game rewards you for doing this with little improvements in equipment and weapons and mixing up the scenery with urban places to wide landscapes keeps it interesting for me. This and me wanting to discover every detail of backstory makes this game so fun to me.
